Cognitive and Educational Assessments (Learning Assessments)

Wendy combines her knowledge of the psychology of learning with a formal learning assessment (The Woodcock-Johnson IV) to create a holistic picture of your child or young person’s strengths and challenges with learning. This also includes an analysis of what factors may be influencing their ability to experience success with learning. Wendy can then work with parents/teachers to help them understand how to best support your child or young person at school.

The Woodcock-Johnson IV (WJIV) is a cognitive and educational assessment used to help us understand areas of strength and difficulty in a person’s learning. It may help us identify whether someone experiences:

  • a specific learning disorder (SLD) such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia or Dyscalculia.

  • Giftedness

  • Intellectual Disability (ID)*

  • In New Zealand we can use this assessment to support applications for Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) at school.

This assessment measures:

  • Cognitive Abilities (memory, attention, and other thinking skills)

  • Achievement (literacy, numeracy, problem-solving skills), and

  • Oral Language (language and auditory skills)

Each of these areas takes around 2 hours to assess, so are split up over different days to prevent them from being too overwhelming.

To give a thorough understanding of what’s going on for you or your child/young person, further information is also gathered from yourself, important others, through conversation, observations and/or questionnaires.

The results are then analysed and all the information is brought together into a comprehensive report. Once the report is ready, we have a feedback session to go through it. We can also share and go through the report with other key adults (e.g. teachers) to help them tailor the support they provide.

COSTS:

  • Initial discussion about whether a learning assessment may be needed (15 mins, email, phone or zoom, free).

  • Intake session (discuss what’s involved, gather information from yourself and/or your child/young person about what’s happening, confirm whether WJIV is appropriate for your needs, signpost to other support if it’s not) up to 1.5 hours; $180 including gst

  • Assessment (WJIV sessions, interviews, observations, additional questionnaires etc), Analysis, Report-writing and Feedback sessions (one for family, one for school) $1500 incl gst

  • Total Cost: $1680 incl. GST*

(*Assessments for intellectual disability cost a little more, as we have to do additional testing and analysis. Wendy will discuss this with you if it’s needed).

  • Additional feedback sessions and/or further support with implementing strategies (with yourself, and/or support people at school/work/other household) $180 per 1 hr session.

Split payment options are available, have a chat with Wendy about your needs.
